Energy use in metal mining: a study in trade-offs

Journal Article · · Conf. Board Rec.; (United States)
OSTI ID:7269588
In contrast with developments in the U.S. economy as a whole and in manufacturing in particular, energy use per unit of output in the mining sector has been increasing over the long run. However, that this is a departure from the norm is much less instructive than the factors that underlie it. For, in mining, the realities and effects of resource limitations are immediate, and the relationships that make energy, environmental, and trade policy decisions so difficult are clear. In this sector, the conflicts between the goals of energy independence and of self-sufficiency in other resources are more evident than in others. Specific energy use in the mining of iron, copper, and bauxite is examined.
