Energy use in mining: patterns and prospects
In no other business sector are the realities of resource limitations more immediate than in mining. This book details the effect of these limitations and other factors on energy consumption in the extractive industries. The authors systematically analyze process and product mix, output levels, technological change, and legal constraints in each of five important mining industries: iron ore mining; copper mining, smelting and refining bauxite mining; bituminous coal and lignite mining; oil and gas extraction; and in the sector as a whole. They also project energy use (total and per unit of output) for the five industries and for the entire sector using insights from their analysis, from questioning of industry experts, and from a study of qualitative and quantitative data.
