Chlorine in coal is determined by oxidation of the sample by combustion and absorption of the contained chlorine by one of two methods. A weighed coal sample is mixed with Eschka mixture (2 parts by weight of light calcined MgO and 1 part of anhydrous Na/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ with both materials as free from chlorine as possible) and burned in a bomb containing O/sub 2/ under pressure with a small amount of (NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ solution. Alternately, a weighed sample is mixed with Eschka mixture and heated at a specified temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere. The chlorides contained in the (NH/sub 4/)/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ solution from the bomb or extracted from the incinerated Eschka mixtures are determined by potentiometric titration by a modified Volhard procedure. The procedure of the duplicate determinations is +-0.03 percent. (BLM)
