This method covers the determination of the total chlorine content of coal. The sample is oxidized by combustion and the contained chlorine absorbed in alkaline reagents by one of the following two methods. A weighed sample is mixed with Eschka mixture and burned in a bomb containing oxygen under pressure and a small amount of ammonium carbonate solution. A weighed sample is mixed with Eschka mixture and heated at a specified temperature in an oxidizing atmosphere. The chlorides contained in the ammonium carbonate solution mentioned in 2.1.1 or extracted from the incinerated Eschka mixture mentioned in 2.1.2 are determined by potentiometric titration or by a modified Volhard procedure.
