The design, operation, and cost of the 464 mi-long 250-kv DC power transmission system installed between the lignite-fueled power plant in Center, N.D. and Duluth, Mn., are discussed. This is the nation's first HVDC transmission line with a solid-state conversion terminal at each end. This system is cheaper than either shipping the coal or AC transmission. (LCL)
