The numerous and unusual technical features of the Square Butte HVDC Transmission System are discussed. This is the U.S.'s first all-solid-state HVDC system and transmits power 464 miles from a ''mine-mouth'' generating plant near lignite coal fields in Center, N.D. to a terminal near Duluth, Mn. The transformers, converter valves, DC filters, control equipment, protection devices, and power line conductors and towers are described. The project was completed on time, within budget, and has better than the required performance. The system's advantages for inter-regional power grid systems are emphasized. (LCL)
