This paper describes a time-of-flight molecular-beam spectrometer vacuum system consisting of five stages of differential evacuation that provide a vacuum of from 10/sup -2/ torr in the source chamber 10/sup -8/-10/sup -9/ torr in the detector chamber. An economical power switching supply for the beam-chopper motor is given that provides complete computer control of the chopper at motor speeds of 300-24,000 rpm. Modifications to the MkH-7304 mass spectrometer are described that allow it to be used as a detector in time-of-flight and mass-spectrometer measurements on line with a computer.
