This paper reports that Yonggwang (YGN) Units 3 and 4, scheduled to begin commercial operation in 1995 and 1996, will be the 10th and 11th nuclear units in the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) system. These plants are 1000-MW pressurized water reactors (PWRs). In late 1990, KEPCO authorized Korean Power Engineering Company (KOPEC) to proceed with engineering for Ulchin (UCN) Units 3 and 4, which are similar units on a different site. In July 1991, contracts were signed with the same U.S. firms (S and L, combustion Engineering, and General Electric) that are participating in the YGN project. The UCN units are scheduled to place the first concrete in the spring of 1993 and to begin commercial operation in 1998 and 1999. The UCN design is based on that of YGN but will incorporate site-specific changes and technical advances.
