Equations are obtained and analyzed for the frequencies of the oppositely traveling waves in a ring laser with a medium in which the transverse distributions of the linear and nonlinear complex gains (polarizabilities) are Gaussian. This distribution approximately simulates the bounded transverse dimensions of the tube. Diffraction of the field occurs at a Gaussian diaphragm. It is shown that in the region of variation of the effective dimensions of the diaphragm and tube, resonators close to confocal possess a much lower diffraction difference in the frequencies of the oppositely traveling waves and are less sensitive to changes in the transverse dimensions of the medium than resonators close to plane or concentric.
