Energy-efficiency enters corporate purchasing policies

Corporate policies to include energy efficiency and conservation as strategies in their capital investments for equipment are noted. Several companies are cited for policies that make efficiency a factor and allow a lower return on investment in energy-conserving equipment. Individual strategies include requiring energy efficiency data and guarantees from vendors, flexible payback periods, and separate capital funds for energy conservation expenditures. Even without corporate policies, many companies are basing purchasing decisions on the basis of saving high-priced fuels, while often blaming potential bureaucratic errors and problems with suppliers for not making a formal commitment. Some companies feel their suppliers are not able to secure efficiency data yet. Changing economic conditions, such as projected fuel costs, are making both supplier and corporations aware of the need to consider lifetime costs of their equipment. (DCK)
