Midway Coal Mining Co. (P and M), a Gulf Oil Corp. subsidiary, will operate the $18 million unit being built at Tacoma, Wash., which will process all major types of coal except anthracite to produce 30 tons/day of solvent-refined (SR) coal, possibly with as little as 0.6 percent by wt sulfur, when completed in mid-1974. According to W. C. Bull (P and M), a 1 percent sulfur residual fuel, rated at 19,000 Btu/lb, would emit 0.5 lb of sulfur per million Btu, whereas a 0.6 percent sulfur SR coal, rated at 16,000 Btu/lb, would emit only about 0.4 lb of sulfur per million Btu. However, the SR coal may still be preferable, as most of the anticipated 1975 air pollution limits are more lenient on sulfur from coal than on sulfur from residual fuels. The SR coal selling at the cost of the raw coal plus $0.35/million Btu should be competitive with 1 percent sulfur residual fuel. This analysis is based on a plant processing 10,000 tons/day of coal to make about 5600 tons/day of SR coal. The Solvent-Refined Coal process will be available without restriction to any U.S. company.
