Coal liquefaction through solvent refining produces clean fuels having no ash, low sulfur content, and a considerably higher heating value than coal; permits use of abundant high-sulfur coal; utilizes proved chemical processing technology and experiences, and places increased reliance on domestic energy supplies. Recently, DOE has awarded Denver-based Pittsburgh and Midway Coal Mining Co., a subsidiary of Gulf Oil Corp., and Southern Company Services, the technical subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Company, contracts to design and potentially build and operate the first modules of commerical-scale plants. The solvent refined coal (SRC) plant to be designed by the Gulf subsidiary will convert coal into liquid and gas fuels. Each of the first module plants would convert about 6000 tons of coal per day into a low-sulfur, nearly ashless fuel, equivalent to 20,000 barrels per day of crude oil. Scale-up of the SRC technology comes after more than 4 years of testing at two smaller-scale pilot plants: a 50 ton-per-day facility at Ft. Lewis, Washington and a six ton-per-day unit at Wilsonville, AL. In this article, which is from a paper presented at the Fifth Energy tecnology Conference sponsored by Governmental Institutes, Inc., development phases of Gulf SRC-II Process are described as well as the good potential for its industrial application.
