Metastability exchange in a mixture of He/sup 3/ and He/sup 4/ isotopes

Analytic expressions are obtained for the magnetic resonance line widths of 2/sup 3/S/sub 1/ metastable helium atoms in a He/sup 3/-He/sup 4/ mixture by taking into account metastability exchange. The cross sections for metastability exchange, sigma/sub 1/=sigma (He-He/sup 3/) and sigma/sub 2/=sigma (He/sup 3/-He/sup 4/) are found in experiments on optical orientation and magnetic resonance of 2/sup 3/S/sub 1/ metastable helium atoms in a He/sup 3/-He/sup 4/ isotope mixture for various temperatures in the range 77--300/sup 0/K. The temperature dependences of these cross sections and their relative differences ..delta..sigma/sigma/sub 1/ are determined. An explanation is given for the behavior of the cross sections sigma/sub 1/ and sigma/sub 2/ and of their temperature dependence.
