Process of distilling material and cracking oil

A process is described for obtaining volatiles from distillable solid carbonaceous material which comprises feeding an autothermic retort with the solid material and distilling the material by passing it in contact with hot non-oxidizing gas. The solid residue from the distillation is burned in the base of the retort with a blast of air to supply the non-oxidizing gas and the heat required for distillation. The vapors evolved by the distillation are fractionally condensed and the heavier fractions are injected at a point above the zone of combustion into the solid material undergoing distillation to act as part of a cooling fluid and to undergo cracking and distillation. The uncondensed gases are heated and injected at a point above the point of injection of the heavier condensate, into the solid material undergoing distillation to aid the distillation.
