A process for separating condensable volatile products from solid carbonaceous material distilled in a retort is described which consists in heating the material to a graduated temperature, withdrawing the distilled vapors arising at different temperatures from contact with the solid material, leading the separated vapors distilled at higher temperatures through the separated vapors distilled at lower temperatures to cause condensation and removing the liquefied volatile matter from the uncondensed vapors, the condensation taking place out of contact with the solid material.
