Distillation of carbonaceous solids

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5151162
A method is described which comprises contacting carbonaceous solids in a distillation zone with sufficient hot distillation residue from previously distilled carbonaceous solids, to raise the temperature of the zone to the point where distillation of the carbonaceous solids is effected to produce volatile products and solid distillation residue still retaining volatile components. A portion of the distillation residue is passed through a heating zone which is maintained at a temperature above that of the distillation zone, whereby more volatile matter is evolved and the temperature of the residue is raised. The heated distillation residue is returned to the distillation zone and a portion of the distillation residue is burned outside of the distillation zone to yield a hot flue gas. The hot flue gas is circulated in heat exchange relation with the distillation residue passing through the heating zone.
