In November of 1974, the first natural gas pipeline compressor powered by a Rolls-Royce industrial RB-211 jet engine went into service on the TransCanada PipeLines system. It is a simple cycle machine which has demonstrated in field tests that it is capable of developing an ISO-rated power of 26,400 shp along with an overall thermal efficiency of 33.8 percent (including inlet and exhaust losses). This corresponds to a heat rate of 7540 Btu/shp-hr. The unit has accumulated about 18,000 operating hours. The Coberra 264 is installed at TransCanada's Burstall, Saskatchewan, compressor station. It operates in parallel with six reciprocating units and four other gas turbine driven centrifugal compressors. Pipeline conditions at this location are normally steady with a suction pressure of about 600 psig and a discharge pressure setpoint of 880 psig. Burstall is the gate station to the TransCanada system and now has a total of 100,400 shp (ISO) installed there.
