TransCanada Pipelines successfully demonstrated that the Coberra 264 compressor unit can provide the fuel economy of a regenerative installation with the simplicity of a simple-cycle design, even at part loads. These results, obtained from field-testing a prototype unit at the Burstall station in Saskatchewan, are especially important in planning the construction of new or additions to transmission facilities with the current increases in gas price. The prototype unit was installed in an existing Avon-powered installation by replacing the Avon gas generator by a Rolls-Royce RB 211 gas generator, replacing the power turbine, and modifying the booster by changing the impellers and coupling for the increased capacity. Operating results indicated that fuel consumption was close to design at both rated and partload, and efficiency close to predicted design performance with 33% for the RB 211 and RT 56 power turbine combination and 85-86% for the turbine alone. The unit has been operated above its baseload rating of 26,400 hp, although it is normally run at 25,000 hp for continuous service. Specific fuel consumption was reported at about 25% lower than 1st-generation simple-cycle gas turbines in service, saving the station $9-$10 million/yr at the new scheduled gas price of $1.15/1000 CF. Problems with guide-vane vibrations, false trip-outs, and rotor lock-up with engine restarts after slight cooling were solved by mounting the blades on a silastic base, isolating the a-c and d-c circuits, and running the engine at minimum load to allow even cooling of the casing and blading until the rotor or casing can be redesigned for heat sinks and extra cooling. Rolls-Royce is also investigating techniques for reducing NO/sub x/ emissions from the combustor.
