Resolving ambiguity in CP -violation parameters

Using present data on charmless {ital B}-meson decays, {ital B}-{ital {bar B}} mixing, and {ital CP}-violating {ital K}-{ital {bar K}} mixing, and the constraint {ital m}{sub {ital t}}=140{plus minus}40 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} derived from a fit to electroweak data, we extract a value of {ital f}{sub {ital B}} (the {ital B}-meson decay constant), and obtain corresponding regions of parameters for elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. Two solutions are found: one with {ital f}{sub {ital B}}{approx}{ital f}{sub {pi}} (similar to values obtained in potential models) and the other with {ital f}{sub {ital B}}{approx}1.7{ital f}{sub {pi}} (closer to the large values favored in recent lattice calculations). Prospects for resolving the ambiguity via measurements of the {ital B}{r arrow}{tau}{nu} and {ital K}{sup +}{r arrow}{pi}{sup +}{nu}{bar {nu}} branching ratios, {ital B}{sub {ital s}-}{ital {bar B}{ital s}} mixing, {ital CP} violation in {ital B}{r arrow}{ital J}/{psi}{ital K}{sub {ital S}} and {ital B}{r arrow}{pi}{pi}, and {epsilon}{prime}/{epsilon} in the kaon system are discussed.
