Computations are carried out for the {sup 1}{ital S}(6{ital s}{sup 2})-{sup 1}{ital P}(6{ital s},6{ital p}) coherent laser excitation of {sup 137}Ba and {sup 138}Ba in a magnetic field. Results are presented for both the steady-state and time-dependent excited-state populations of the Zeeman-split magnetic sublevels. The quantum-statistical Liouville-equation approach (for the reduced density matrix) is compared to the rate-equations approach. Significant differences are found between these, due to the interference between strongly overlapping lines (especially for {sup 137}Ba). The time-evolution profiles indicate that the {sup 137}Ba transient time is much longer than that of {sup 138}Ba.
