An X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic study is described of Mo clusters in zeolite Y formed by the adsorption and decomposition of Mo(CO)/sub 6/. The XPS data show that this method produces a uniform dispersion of Mo. The Mo clusters have a Mo 3d binding energy ca 1.2 eV higher than that of bulk Mo, which is attributed to their small size (less than or equal to 12 A).
