The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) met in Montreal from Novermber 26 to December 7, 1979 for the conference on Long-Term Energy Resources. Energy experts and policymakers exchanged information on the availability and costs of energy supplies in the future in an effort to help the 400 delegates from 90 nations evaluate present energy production and development. The information was intended to assist developing countries and to address the most-pressing world energy issues, specifically the dependence on conventional oil. The delegates noted that no energy source has ever become obsolete on a global scale and, given the role of energy in development, zero growth is unacceptable. Energy efficiecy must be stressed of during the period of transition to alternative energy sources. The delegates concluded that each nation should make a resource assessment, establish energy policies and institutions to develop resources, and cooperate with each other to promote and share optimal energy systems. The United Nations is charged to monitor and assess new developments, to suggest new areas for research and development, and to help establish the appropriate bodies. (DCK)
