Small energy sources may provide a powerful tool for building energy self-reliance and advancing economic development in many countries of the Third World as well as in industrialized countries. Over 300 delegates from 60 countries participated in the September 9-18, 1981 UNITAR Conference on Small Energy Resources in Los Angeles to share information and learn about new ideas in planning long-term energy resource development. Conferees discused the need for more information on the potential of small energy resources as well as the obstacles to their development. The advantages include low-cost energy for rural areas, the opportunity for diverse local energy resources, and long-term stability as the big deposits are depleted. Among the ideas presented were the establishment of an Institute for Small Energy Resources and follow-up meetings on the regional level.
