Submillimeter plasma interferometry at two wavelengths

A pulsed submillimeter laser operating at wavelengths of 118 and 337 ..mu.. was used in an interferrometric determination of the electron density in the positive column of an arc discharge in argon. Pressures from 1 to 3 torr and discharge currents from 8 to 32 A were studied. The refractive indices of air, methane, hydrogen, and argon at pressures in the range 0.2 to 0.1 atm were measured at the same wavelengths.
