Sintering of 'shell' molybdena-alumina catalysts

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)
Catalysts containing an outer shell of molybdenum trioxide were prepared by impregnating Houdry 2005 alumina (0.39 cc/g pore volume) with ammonium molybdate solution by the no-excess-solution technique. Sintering of these catalysts in air at 750/sup 0/-925/sup 0/C for 1-6 hr led to an increased average pore size, a change from bimodel to unimodal pore distributions, and an increase in pore volume to 0.49 cc/g. Below 850/sup 0/C, the molybdena shell inner boundary migrated towards the pellet center. Volatilization of the molybdena occurred at higher temperatures. The molybdena specific surface area, as measured by oxygen adsorption, decreased over the entire range of sintering temperatures. The migration of the molybdena shell was measured microscopically after reducing the molybdena to the visible blue molybdenum(V) oxide with hydrazine or hydrogen.
