ERA spectroscopy of oxygen adsorbed on alumina-supported 8% molybdenum trioxide revealed three paramagnetic species: at 93/sup 0/K, electron transfer from molybdenum(V) sites to O/sub 2/ produced O/sub 2//sup -//molybdenum(VI), and at room temperature, O/sub 2//sup -//aluminum(III) and O/sup -//aluminum(III) were identified. The O/sup -/ was located at the surface but was less reactive than the O/sup -/ formed from N/sub 2/O on molybdena/silica (e.g., was not affected by exposure to CO or H/sub 2/ at room temperature). It is probably the intermediate in molybdena-catalyzed oxidation and exchange reactions. Spectra and 11 references.
