Deep water, strong currents violent weather, and a section of sea bottom that is saw-toothed with jagged rock outcrops are but four of the obstacles nature presented constructors building the crude oil pipe line between the Brent field area of the North Sea and Firths Voe in the Shetland Islands. The submarine trunkline is under construction for Shell (UK) Exploration and Production, Ltd., and will extend about 147 km (92 mi.) from the shore to the Cormorant platform. While the plafform is primarily for production, it also serves as the gathering station for the Brent, Dunlin, Thistle and Hutton fields that comprise the Brent complex. Construction began on March 30, 1975.
