Understanding a project's market value is a key element of effective financing and asset management. More than 5 percent of the operating independent power capacity in the United States changed hands during 1993, and transactions in progress this year include many projects as well as companies, such as O'Brien Energy, North Canadian Power, and Westmoreland Energy. Projects in all states of development are changing ownership, including those in pre-power purchase agreement (PPA), development, construction, and operating phases. A host of buyers and sellers are participating in this power project market, with price tags varying widely. This article describes some of these transactions.
