Utility asset sales
Redevelopment and sale of regulated utilities` rate-based projects is helping to fuel an escalating trend in domestic power project market activity. Generating assets that have been in utility rate bases more than 70 years are coming to market, and sales of these projects can yield beneficial transactions for the selling utilities and the purchasing new owners. For utilities, the possible benefits of selling selected assets are numerous. Through a sale they can remove a high-cost project from an otherwise efficient portfolio or reap some value from a unit that has been mothballed or retired. Utility assets can be attractive acquisition candidates for new, independent ownership. The market for these assets is growing and creative deal structures can support transactions that benefit both buyers and sellers.
