The influence of the chemical composition and structure of the matrix on the luminescence properties of uranium(VI) in crystallophosphors based on alkali metal halides has been studied. An 1:1 mixture of NaF and Na/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ is optimal for developing the luminescence properties of uranium. A low-temperature luminescence method has been developed to determine uranium with a detection limit of 5 x 10/sup -10/ g and a standard relative deviation of 0.15. The method is applicable for uranium determination in geological and sea water samples.
