Representatives of Silicon Valley industries, state and federal health agencies and interested citizens testified at a field hearing in San Jose, California on the problems of hazardous wastes contaminating surface and ground waters. The hearing, part of the review required under the Superfund Act, explored whether programs to control leakage from chemical storage tanks is adequate. Other issues under investigation were the problem of assessing risks and determining threshold levels at which health hazards become at threat. Silicon Valley, with its concentration of high technology industries provided an example of the nation's overlapping concerns about toxic wastes and the effect on public health and the environment. Material submitted for the record by the witnesses and other interested parties follows the testimony of the 13 witnesses.
