Considerable attention has been given to alcohol fuel production from biomass. This book addresses the possibility of blending biomass-derived alcohol with gasoline to produce a transportation fuel. It is technologically possible to develop a liquid transportation fuel system based on alcohol-gasoline blends. The following topics are discussed: chemistry of alcohols; methanol synthesis; methanol synthesis from wood wastes; automotive uses of methanol; ethanol synthesis; development of a nationwide biomass-based alcohol-gasoline fuel system; special uses and problems with alcohol fuels; and mass production of biomass for synthetic fuels.
