Conoco's TLP weathers North Sea storms

After two winters of experience, Hutton, the first oil-production tension leg platform (TLP), has proven it can handle the North Sea environment without difficulty. Even in severe storms, production downtime has not been experienced. Conoco and partners continue to measure record, and analyze the oceanographic parameters and marine responses of the TLP with its unique vertically restrained mooring system (see box). These records are yielding important insights into the behavior of this new type of deepwater platform, and laying the foundation for the extension of the TLP concept into much deeper water. The severity of a typical North Sea gale (Force 10) is illustrated by the two views which were taken from atop a TLP column and beneath the deck. The response of the TLP to severe conditions such as these is recorded by an onboard computer system.
