The Pale Verde nuclear generating station (PVNGS) units were originally supplied with central digital feedwater control systems. Arizona Public Service (APS) implemented a program to improve the performance of the system. Recently, the recommended setting changes were implemented in PVNGS Unit 3. The evaluation of the new feedwater control system settings during a 0 to 100% power ascension with 5% master controller setpoint changes and a subsequent unplanned reactor trip showed that the desired performance improvements had been achieved. The computer simulation proved to be an invaluable tool for evaluating the feedwater control system performance and alleviated the need for extensive in-plant testing. An additional benefit provided by the simulation was the ability to provide the operations staff with feedwater control system performance expectations for various transients. The PVNGS Unit 3 feedwater control system is a fully automatic 0 to 100% power control system that requires no operator actions.
