Here are new approaches to tank farm construction

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)

Tank farms similar to the one shown in Fig. 1 are a vital component of petroleum product storage and distribution. In the majority of cases, tank farms are located near waterways for proximity to the major transportation channels of the petroleum products. Unfortunately, soils near waterways, or in the coastal zone, are soft and compressible, and are rather undesirable from a construction standpoint. Several methods of soil improvement have been outlined in this article. The employment of these methods can reduce the capital outlays for the tank-farm construction in poor soil conditions. Advance planning by owners and input of state-of-the-art geotechnical engineering in construction management is a must in drawing the benefits from these new methods. Part 2 of this series of articles will present examples of tank-soil interaction and the probable causes of tank leaks and failures.
