ICI uprates from 54% CHP to more than 75% efficiency

By extensive modification and refurbishment of two Kongsberg gas turbines, and the installation of new fired boat-recovery boilers, ICI Pharmaceuticals have upgraded an old CHP system in their plant at Macclesfield England to meet increased steam demand. With full supplementary firing, the new boilers produce as much steam as three existing gas-fired boilers, which now have been relegated to peak-shaving and stand-by duty. Main steam demand is for space heating with a base load of process steam used to make wide range of pharmaceutical products. The four principal aspects of the CHP refurbishment are described.
