As the gas-distribution authority for the Japanese capital, Tokyo Gas has promoted a number of gas-fired district heating and cooling systems using fired boilers and absorption chillers. However, the gas-turbine, combined heat and power (CHP) system that the company has installed in the basement of its new 27-story headquarters building represents a new concept for community energy supply. It's the country's first CHP project in the non-industrial application, and Tokyo Gas is using the installation to promote small-scale CHP projects as a means of securing its share of the energy market. It is hoped that the gas-turbine CHP system will demonstrate a new concept for community energy supply.
