Gas utility thwarts old man winter

Arkansas Louisiana Gas Co. (ARKLA) increased peak deliverability to the 675,000 customers in its five-state system by expanding an existing underground storage reservoir at Ada, Okla., to a withdrawal capacity of about 200 million cu ft/day. Because the main line system operates at 700-900 psig and the reservoir pressure is 170-450 psig, gas flows freely into the reservoir but requires compression for withdrawal. Each of the four Ingersoll-Rand Co. GT-221 Centregal MG-2 gas turbine compressor packages, rated at 4250 hp, can move at least 50 million cu ft/day from the storage field into the high-pressure pipeline. ARKLA selected the Centregal package because of the gas turbine's characteristic horsepower increase at low ambient temperatures, which corresponds with the cold weather operation of the peaking project. The Centregal compressor is useful in pressure ranges formerly limited to reciprocating machinery. The high compression ratio (25:30.1) Centregal consists of three multistage centrifugal compressor casings mounted in a single bundle and directly connected to the GT-22 turbine by a speed-increasing gear.
