Gas-storage project makes 50 billion cu ft available

A discussion of Mountain Fuel Resources Inc.'s Clay Basin gas storage field, which provides storage service to Northwest Pipeline Corp. and El Paso Natural Gas Co., covers a geological description of the field; the environmental impact analyses and permits required before construction could begin; a description of the project components, including the 4900 hp (total) compressors at the tie-in between Mountain Fuel's 20 in. line and Northwest Pipeline's 26 in. line, the five permanent Ingersoll-Rand 2600 hp compressors for injection and withdrawal service and with infinite step control, the eleven 1000 hp compressors used for injection, the power generation and other auxiliary facilities, the 26 injection and withdrawal wells, the 89,000 ft of 6 and 10 in. laterals, and the 18 field dehydration units with capacities of 6-35 million cu ft/day at 700 psig operating pressure; and automated control of the system, which is designed for 16 hr/day unattended operation and which is remotely controlled by a microwave system in Salt Lake City.
