Emergency gasoline specifications are set forth for guidance during an energy shortage for the purpose of increasing gasoline availability. Supplies of gasoline are divided into 5 volatility classes, and the specification differentiates the use of these classes according to the month of the year and the geographic location in the U.S. The gasolines are further categorized into three antiknock index levels each for leaded and unleaded gasolines. ASTM methods are cited for the determination of the following properties and/or materials in the gasoline: boiling range, vapor-liquid ratio, vapor pressure, research method octane number, motor method octane number, corrosion, existent gum, sulfur, and lead.
