Energy-Resources Map Series of Circum-Pacific region
Maps portraying the energy resources of the Circum-Pacific region are being compiled for each of the quadrants and the Antarctica region at a scale of 1:10 million. A Pacific basin map sheet is being compiled at a scale of 1:17 million. Energy resources to be depicted include oil, gas, oil shale, oil sand, coal, and geothermal energy. The resource data are plotted on a simplified geologic/tectonic background to show the relationship of energy resources to the tectonic framework of the Circum-Pacific region. The compilation of geologic, tectonic, and geophysical elements for the various maps indicates structural and tectonic trends that influence the distribution of energy resources of the Circum-Pacific region. Petroleum and coal resources are widely distributed throughout continental interior as well as convergent and divergent margin basins of the Circum-Pacific region. Geothermal potential exists in many areas of the Circum-Pacific; it is generally related to spreading ridges and subduction zones.
