Plans and problems of Northwest Quadrant, Circum-Pacific Map Project

Compilation efforts by the Northwest Quadrant Panel, headquartered at the Geological Survey of Japan, are now directed toward finalizing the Tectonic, Energy-Resources, and Mineral-Resources Maps. These maps are targeted for publication during 1987-1988. The Geographic, Base, Plate-Tectonic, and Geodynamic Maps have been printed, and the Geologic Map is scheduled for publication in 1986. The Tectonic Map is especially challenging owing to the unique island-arc-back-arc systems surrounding the continent, which is believed to have grown by accretion of terranes. The initial sheet in the Tectonic Map Series was compiled using the adjacent Southwest Quadrant Map. It is being used as a guide in compiling the Northwest Quadrant Map. A large area of overlap is shared by the two quadrants. Draft copies of the Energy-Resources and Mineral-Resources Maps will be posted: comments and additions are requested. A serious problem in compiling these maps has been acquiring up-to-date information from the quadrant countries. Through the efforts of the 12th Annual Northwest Quadrant Panel Meeting, the Circum-Pacific Panel Chairmen's meetings, and other international geoscience meetings, the Northwest Panel has been able to obtain important and valuable contributions. However, the data are incomplete. In the immediate future, an East Asia Basin Analysis Project has been planned as a joint effort of the International Union of Geological Sciences, CCOP, and the Circum-Pacific Map Project and Council. Eight large-format base maps at a scale of 1:2 million are being prepared by the Circum-Pacific Map Project. The Northwest Quadrant Panel is cooperating closely in this project.
