In the two previous papers the experimental observations on the cubic {yields} hexagonal phase transformation in silicon were presented and a crystallographic analysis was given which explained this transformation on the basis of lattice accommodation in twin-twin interactions or propagation of secondary twins into the matrix. In this paper, the martensitic nature of the transformation is discussed and other recent observations of hexagonal silicon in ion-implanted material, heat-treated Czochralski Si, and silicon deformed under hydrostatic pressure are considered in the light of this work. 66 refs.
