Offshore pipeline costs skyrocket

Comparisons of cost estimates made in 1973 and 1976 for offshore pipeline construction projects in the Gulf of Mexico indicate a 150 percent increase in construction costs. The estimated cost of the 72-mile 36-in. main line of the Stingray Pipeline Co. system was $556,658/mile in 1973; the High Island Offshore System now under construction will cost an average of $1,333,109/mile for 67 miles of 42-in., 26 miles of 36-in., and 110.5 miles of 30-in. pipe. More direct comparisons reveal that the largest increases occurred in costs for line pipe, pipelaying, side valves, and side-valve installation. Significant increases are also apparent for internal, concrete, and corrosion coatings.
