Study of the Tho/sub 2/ Doppler effect in a tight /sup 235/UO/sub 2/--ThO/sub 2/ lattice moderated with D/sub 2/O (LWBR Development Program)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7010348
The ThO/sub 2/ Doppler coefficient for resonance neutron capture was measured in the hard flux spectrum of the ETA-I assembly, a tight D/sub 2/O moderated lattice of 6.7 w/o /sup 235/UO/sub 2/-ThO/sub 2/ fuel rods. A ThO/sub 2/ sample rod of 0.42 cm diameter was irradiated in a small oven inserted into the center of the lattice. Measurements were made between 296/sup 0/K and 950/sup 0/K. The experiment was analyzed with the RECAP program, a full energy range Monte Carlo calculation with detailed cross section representation and an explicit geometric description. Cross sections were ENDF/B Version 2 deuterium and oxygen and LWBR /sup 232/Th. The measured result was A(900/sup 0/K)/A(296/sup 0/K) = 1.280 +- 0.32 sigma. The calculation gave 1.213 +- 0.010 sigma, which is 5% below experiment, with an uncertainty of approximately 2.5%. 5 references. (NSA 30: 1938)
