Preparation of the oxide superconductors (La,Gd,Ba,Ce) sub 8 Cu sub 6 O sub z and (La,Gd,Ba,Sr,Ce) sub 8 Cu sub 6 O sub z

We have synthesized nearly single-phase ((Gd{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}La{sub {ital x}}){sub 1/2}Ba{sub 1/3}Ce{sub 16}){sub 8}CU{sub 6}O{sub {ital z}} ({ital x}=0, (1/3), (1/2)) and single-phase (La{sub 1/6}Gd{sub 1/3} (Ba{sub 1{minus}{ital y}}Sr{sub {ital y}}){sub 1/3} Ce{sub 1/6}){sub 8} Cu{sub 6}O{sub {ital z}} ({ital y} = (1/4), (1/2)). The x-ray-diffraction patterns were successfully indexed for tetragonal unit cells of approximately the same dimension with the lattice parameters of {ital a}=3.830--3.858 A and {ital c}=28.298--28.489 A. (La{sub 1/6}Gd{sub 1/3}Ba{sub 1/6}Sr{sub 1/6}Ce{sub 1/6}){sub 8}CU{sub 6}O{sub 18.83}, which was annealed at a high oxygen pressure of {ital P}(O{sub 2})=200 atm, exhibited a metallic temperature dependence of resistivity, and a very sharp superconducting transition at {ital T}{sub {ital c}}{sup on}=39 K ({ital T}{sub {ital c}}{sup {ital R}=0}=36 K). The Meissner signal at 10 K of this sample was about 35% of the perfect diamagnet.
