We have synthesized single-phase Y(Ba{sub 1{minus}{ital y}}La{sub {ital y}}){sub 2}Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8} and (Y{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}Ca{sub {ital x}})(Ba{sub 0.9}La{sub 0.1}){sub 2}Cu{sub 4}O{sub 8} ceramics (0{le}{ital x}{le}0.1, 0{le}{ital y}{le}0.1) by means of high-oxygen-pressure sintering using an O{sub 2} hot isostatic press. It was revealed by powder x-ray diffraction that Ca and La were successfully substituted for Y and Ba, respectively. The superconducting properties of the ceramics were characterized by electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. The superconducting critical temperature tended to be enhanced by Ca doping and deteriorated by La doping. This tendency may be explained by the idea of carrier concentration control.
