The superconductive and magnetic properties of compounds in Gd{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}Pr{sub {ital x}}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}} (0{le}{ital x}{le}1.0) and {ital R}{sub 0.8}Pr{sub 0.2}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}} ({ital R}=Y and rare-earth elements) have been investigated by means of x-ray-diffraction, electrical-resistivity, and magnetic-susceptibility measurements. No obvious discrepancies were found between Gd{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}Pr{sub {ital x}}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}} and Y{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}Pr{sub {ital x}}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}} from the structural and magnetic analysis. The depression of {ital T}{sub {ital c}} by the Pr concentration can be described by the Abrikosov and Gor'kov pair-breaking-like relation, while the critical concentration {ital x}{sub cr} is considerably lower in Gd{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}Pr{sub {ital x}}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}} than in Y{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}Pr{sub {ital x}}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}}. In the {ital R}{sub 0.8}Pr{sub 0.2}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}} system, the {Delta}{ital T}{sub {ital c}} ({Delta}{ital T}{sub {ital c}}={ital T}{sub {ital c}}({ital R}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}}){minus}{ital T}{sub {ital c}} ({ital R}{sub 0.8}Pr{sub 0.2}Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}})) strongly depends on the ionic radius of rare-earth elements. This suggests that the hybridization between Pr 4{ital f} states and conduction bands may play an important role in the quenching of superconductivity in the PrBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{ital y}} system.
