Facts and perspectives of Circum-Pacific Mineral-Resources Map Series
A discussion of the Circum-Pacific Mineral-Resources Map Series is presented. Significant deposits are all shown, according to their relative importance; however, in several regions, small, presently unexploitable deposits or occurrences were also incorporated. Therefore, the maps do not always represent the present resource situation, but they do identify favorable areas for the occurrence of certain minerals and thus help in exploration planning and resource assessment. By incorporating sea-floor mineral occurrences-which include ferromanganese nodules, hydrothermal sulfides, phosphorites, and heavy mineral sands-the maps integrate useful information although most sea-floor deposits have not been economically evaluated. The Mineral-Resources Maps are intended to be as factual as possible, in order to provide solid data that can be complemented with information from other Circum-Pacific maps (e.g., Plate-Tectonic, Manganese Nodules, Sea-floor Sediments, and Sedimentation Rates). This map series should constitute an important document to stimulated the study and analysis of the distribution, characteristics, and genesis of ore deposits. Areas selected to show these perspectives are included in this report.
