The effect of flow on inhibitor film life
- Champion Technologies, Inc., Fresno, TX (United States)
In the present work two standard laboratory tests were used to generate a low and a high velocity condition, and used to determine the performance of three different corrosion inhibitors. The three inhibitors at 100 ppm reduced corrosion in the low velocity test between 85 % and 90%. The same inhibitors at 500 ppm reduced corrosion in the high velocity pipe loop between 37% and 87%. The corrosion severity was greater in the pipe loop which made it necessary to add a higher dosage, in order to achieve similar performance. The high velocity-severity conditions in the pipe loop also enabled a more accurate determination of inhibitor performance. The pipe loop corrosion test appears to be an effective tool for predicting the performance of corrosion inhibitors in the actual pipeline system. Field tests are currently underway in order to confirm this conclusion.
